Airplane Rules & Etiquette: 10 Ways To Be Kinder Travelers

Let's talk about airplane etiquette. We all know that flying can well, alot and it's important to be considerate of other passengers. Here are some tips to help you be a polite and respectful traveler on your next flight.

1. You have limited space

First and foremost, respecting other people's personal space is crucial when it comes to airplane etiquette. With airplane seats being notoriously cramped, it's important to keep your arms and legs within your own seat area. Avoid encroaching on others, as this can lead to discomfort and tension. If you need a little extra space, consider opting for a seating option that provides more space. We are talking comfort plus or maybe business class. These will cost more but your fellow travelers will appreciate it if you are a person who likes having space to move around.

2. Reclining your seat

Another important aspect of airplane etiquette is to avoid reclining your seat during meal times. This can be especially difficult for the person behind you to eat when your seat is reclined. If you need to recline your seat, do it outside of meal times to avoid any issues. Additionally, be sure to notify the person behind you before reclining your seat, as a little courtesy can prevent unnecessary discomfort or conflict.

3. Keep the volume down

Being mindful of your volume is also crucial when it comes to airplane etiquette. Keep your voice low when talking to other passengers. You don't want to disturb people who are trying to sleep or work. And just bring headphones, don't use your phone speakers on the airplane, even if you think you have the volume down low.

4. Be kind to the flight attendants

Being considerate of the cabin crew is an important part of airplane etiquette. Flight attendants work hard to ensure that passengers have a safe and comfortable flight. It's important to show them respect and gratitude for their hard work. When you board the plane, greet the flight attendants and thank them for their service. If they offer you something to eat or drink, be polite and thank them for their efforts.

5. Traveling with children?

If you're traveling with children, be sure to keep them occupied and well-behaved. Bring along games or toys to keep them entertained, and make sure they are following airplane etiquette as well. Be sure to bring enough snacks and drinks to keep them hydrated and happy during the flight. We know it's tough. But it's just nice to see parents who are at least trying. And thank you in advance.

6. Storing your bags

When using the overhead bins, be courteous to other passengers. Try to use only the space you need, and avoid placing your bags in a way that will prevent others from accessing their own belongings. Also, if you’d like to stow your personal item in an overhead bin, wait until everyone has gotten their carry-on’s stowed first. Then, if there is space, store your personal item. If you have a bulky item, consider checking it at the gate to avoid any issues.

7. Strong smells

Additionally, it's important to be aware of any strong scents you may be carrying, such as perfumes or colognes. Some people may be sensitive to these scents, so try to use them sparingly or not at all while on the plane. Similarly, avoid bringing any pungent foods on the plane that may offend other passengers.

Flash back to that scene from The Office, when Oscar brings an egg salad sandwich on the plane.

8. Getting some sleep

When it's time to sleep, be mindful of those around you. Try to keep your movements and noise to a minimum to avoid disturbing other passengers. I know, we all swear we don’t snore. But maybe, just maybe you do a little bit. And a big one, just lean away from the person in the seat next to you when you decide to nod off. Waking up on their shoulder would make for an awkward rest of the flight.

9. Traveling while sick

Nothing is worse than when your super excited, ready for your awesome vaction. And someone come walking down the isle coughing and hacking and sits down next to you. Nobody wants to get sick on their big vacation. Some people save up for a long time just to afford to go on this trip. Spending it sick in a hotel room is just awful. So please, if you're sick, try your best to reschedule your flight to a time when your feeling better. And if it’s absolutely necessary, bring handwipes with you and perhaps wear a face covering. It’s not to strange in this post-pandemic world anymore.

10. Deboarding the plane

It’s funny to me every time. The plane lands and as soon as the seatbelt light turns off, people rush to the isle in a frenzy to get their bags and get off the plane exactly as fast as everyone else. Deboarding the plane is just going to take time, especially on big planes. Be kind to your fellow travelers and offer assistance to those who may need help getting their bags down from the overhead bins. There is no need to stand behind them and rush them to go faster.

In conclusion, practicing airplane etiquette is essential to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable flight experience for all passengers. By following these tips and being respectful of others, you can make air travel a more pleasant experience for everyone. Remember that being considerate and respectful is not only the right thing to do, but it can also make your own travel experience more pleasant and stress-free. So let's all do our part to create a more harmonious and pleasant air travel environment for everyone.
